• I have a 95 VR6 automat.

I have noticed since a time that the fan has run after I left the car. That is not usual because it's early spring with temp near freezing point. I have also noticed the car have become hard to start, I have to run the starter a much longer time. When car is running I haven't noticed any other problem.

Today the motor was really hot, the warning light for motor temp was blinking. The meter show 120 degreas and oil temp 122. Water level was ok. I was little afraid that something dangerous should happen but I didn't drive so far. I noticed that the hose from thermostat was really hot.

I first thought it could be the thermostat that didn't open, but it isn't an usual problem.

I now have started to wonder if it could be that the motor have an air leek so the mixture is to lean. If the mixture is to lean I think the motor will be warmer. How does that sound? The fact that the car now is hard to start could perhaps depond on to lean mixture.

I think the Fan is o.k., the oil temperature is o.k too...Sometimes I´ve 130°C
but the thermostat...!?!...Open??? Are you sure??? That is the problem! Change it...

The fan is ok. It should be working if temp is too hot. The temp light is blinking, so the motor is overheated, no doubt.

  • of course, but the water temperature is too hot. This is the problem,or not!?!And the thermostat is the error! The second radiatorcircuit open too late...It must open at
~90-100°C...Do you understand me? This is my first english lesson since 1996 :grinning_squinting_face:

PS: 120 degrees are too much!!!The thermostat open too late (or none!) but maybe....

Check the waterpump!! Isenough pressure,or not?

Can't the engine be too hot due to to lean mixture? I mean, so hot that the cooling system can't hold down the temp.

sure, it´s possible, check this first, but i think in your case, like the other´s said, the thermostat is damaged!
I have had the same Problem a year ago. After i changed the thermostat the water temp was ok.
like metty-vr6 said, if the thermostat opens the second ciruit too late or never, the temp is rising because there is not enough mixture in the first circuit to cool down the system.
