VR6, G40 cam pos sensor open interm.

  • Hi!

I have this fault code (dtc). A mechanic told me it can be cam chain that is worn, and that wil give this dtc. Motor is also little harder to start. Earlier it started instantly, now it takes 1-2 sec. Everything else is ok. Can the chain and this dtc do that it will be harder to start?

  • Zitat von Jan-Dirk

Which engine, where is the code being indicated?
A worn cam chain will either kill the engine when it finally ripps apart or it will cause rattling noises, it will not effect the starting performance.

Which engine? A VR6. The code is 00515, cam pos sensor G40, open or short to plus, intermittent. Read with VAG-COM. This mechanic said it starts to rattle when the strainer could not handle the problem, but in this case, it can. He said that a worn chain could give the dtc, and also start problem. I don't know.

  • Hmm... I'm not familiar with the VR6 engine but I checked my manual and yes, this code indeed is for the above mentioned G40 sensor.
I still don't fully believe that this could really be the reason for your starting problems but on the other hand - maybe the ECM (electronic control module) is switched into a kind of emergency programme with delayed ignition timings? That's just a guess.
Did you check the ususal stuff like spark plugs, fuel filter, etc?
Hopefully some other guy can give better advise.
Meanwhile go and fix that worn out chain!

    Best regards,

    Jan-Dirk

  • sorry my english is not the best
is the error remains after deleting?
if yes then i know this problem this code is shown if the camshaft position is wrong i think the camshaft is snap over you better open up the camcover and check this and also chek the chain adjuster the runner and the length from the chain
you can test the length if you screw out the chain adjuster exhaust the air and and screw it in
and now test if you can turn the camshaft if the chain can snap over you have to build out your engine and cange all parts chain adjuster,chain,runner.... and test your compression perhaps one of the valve coudt be damaged i do this since 3 years and this is no new problem you stop your engine the chain adjuster doesn´t hold the oil presure and get back chain is get longer after the years and miles you starts up your engine and bingo chain snap over camshaft postion is wrong and your piston have nice meeting with valves
i hope you understand my english and i couldt help you
