Help! VR6 is Kaput! - Cologne

  • Hi Guys,

Just joined the Forum today. Already posted an "Hello" Thread.

I live in Cologne. I have a 1995 VR6 Storm. Limited edition from the very last Corrados made.

The engine has developed a "ticking" noise which increases with engine revs. Sound a bit like a bicycle.
I need to find a VR6 Engineer in the Cologne area to diagnose and fix the problem. Can someone please give me a name of a good VW Specialist.

  • Hi and welcome Mike.

I hope that you don't have the "Steuerkettenrasseln" (i would translate ist witch timing chain noise).
Look at a few youtube videos and compare to your sound. Maybe it is that sound. If it is so, the repair is a little bit expensive (but the repair should last very long, so it is an investment that you have to do only once)

    kind regards, Matze

  • Hi Matze782

Timing Chain rattle is correct. I will have a look for those videos.
I don't really care about cost as I am going to keep this Corrado a very long time. I've been looking for a Storm with this spec for years.

I just want to find a good mechanic who will care for the car and do a good job. Owning an old car is never cheap. I have my TDi Golf for daily driving.

Any Cologne forum members out there??

  • I have also a TDI Golf as daily driver. Pretty cheap if your other car is a VR6 :face_with_tongue:

If i i have it right in my mind, a repair of the timing chain will cost about 600-1200 Euro and depends on your repair skills. If you do it on oyur own, it will cost about 600 Euro, and a Workshop (is it right for Werkstatt?) will take abot 1200 Euros.

Please don`t forget to chance the Oilpump, because it is the reason for the chain getting longer.

    greetings Matze

The sound in that video is not timing chain noise. That should be the "Hydrostössel" and will not be so expensive.

Now it is time for a forum-member near Cologne to check your VR6 and make sure what it is exactly.

    greetings Matze

  • Matoa: Ich glaube alle Export Corrados waren 2,8er, falls das deine Frage war.

mike: Are the export Models like the GB Storm not equipped with the 2.8l Vr6 Machines?

  • Bin davon ausgegangen das es sein Motor war :ohmann:

    @ Mike Sorry my mistake

  • Only American Corrado's had engines 2.8.
Something to do with emission controls.

All UK VR6's should be 2.861 cc. Engine code ABV.

    No problem Matoa:)

Just been searching the UK Corrado Forum and it looks like my problem may be related to tappets.
I think putting some thicker oil in the engine may solve this.

What is German for "tappets" ?

  • Hydrostössel?

I can not open the Youtube video...:face_with_rolling_eyes:

Dont alleviate the symptoms, solve the problem.

You can fight the ticking noise with thicker oil, but if your tappets make the noise even if the engine is warm, they should be replaced.

  • WFT is okay.

If the noise really comes from the tappets, there should be no problem driving it there (at your own risk!!)

The Youtube problem seems to be a problem on my pc.

  • I have an appointment with an engineering company here in Koln tomorrow.
Schmitz & Kreiger. Only about 3 km from my house.

Hopefully they can fix her

  • Ok. Visited Schmitz & Krieger in Loevenich today.
They think that the Conrod Bearing is damaged.
When they disconnect the sparkplug from Cyclinder 1. The noise stops.

They are going to take the engine out and examine it. Hopefully they will be able to fix it quickly. I will also have the timing chains and clutch changed at the same time. Is there any other work I should ask them to do?
